![]() With the ability to deliver more doses to the tumor and less to the healthy tissues, the patient has much fewer side effects, and they have a higher chance of the tumor responding to the treatment and not returning. “That really is the reason that capped out our limit to the amount of radiation that we can deliver to the tumor we have to deliver it to no higher than the healthy body can tolerate.” “So when the healthy body sees radiation, that is what causes side effects,” Dover said. The better new technology can get most of the radiation dose to the cancer, and the least amount of radiation dose to the nearby healthy body allowing them to give the maximal dose to kill cancer while causing the least amount of side effects. So that really allows us the ability to more confidently deliver high doses of radiation with greater accuracy each day.” With many of our treatments, we have what we call a millimeter precision in terms of treatment alignment. “It exponentially, not just doubled, but exponentially increased the ability to align the patients exactly how we want them. “The pitch of the table, meaning that the head is kicked up a little bit with the feet going down, or vice versa,” Dover said. The newest technology allows the table to roll, and Dover explained that it is similar to a “log roll,” and it also can move like an “X.” The flat table could only move right to left, back to front, and up and down. “So historically, the table that the patient lies on could only move in three directions,” Dover said. The first is about two years ago they obtained what they call 6-DOF (6 Degrees of Freedom) in “the movement of the table that the patient lies on.” So, we like to take this to factories, different health care facilities in rural areas to reach those women who may not otherwise to get to our facility to have their screening mammogram.Dover explained that the cancer center has actually had a couple of big updates to its technology in the last two years. Jaqi: “There are a lot of patients who, due to their work schedules, they’re not able to get to the breast center, you know, during the week when our normal business hours are. Gretchen: “Why is this so important for you all to have this on wheels to take to a major company?” So, this really is the best that you can get and again it’s the same that we have at our breast center. The really nice thing about the 3D technology is for younger women, women with dense breast tissue or women who’ve had breast cancer, it does pick up smaller cancers that we can find at an early stage so we have a better prognosis or outcome for that patient. This does provide all of our patients with the newest 3D technology that Shelia had mentioned. Vincent Evansville Mammographer “The mammography unit that we have on our coach now is the same as you would get if you came to our Epworth location breast center.
